Greek Blue Flag For 2013
Ninety-four three hundred (393) Greek coast and nine (9) marinas won this year’s International Quality Award “Blue Flags”
Announced by the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), National Operator of the International Program “Blue Flag” in our country, the beaches and marinas awards the “Blue Flag” for 2013. With 393 award-winning beaches, Greece is again, as in recent years, the second in the world among 48 countries. The International Committee awarded this year, 3,179 beaches and 659 marinas around the world. There is an effort, in cooperation with relevant government agencies to increase the number of award-winning marina.The program “Blue Flag”The “Blue Flag” is an international symbol of quality, considered the most famous symbol in the environmental world. Awarded internationally since 1987, to beaches and marinas that meet the stringent requirements of. There are enough beaches to have the desired, excellent bathing water quality. It should also be kept and the remaining 31 strict criteria relating to cleanliness, organization, information, safety of bathers and visitors, protect the natural wealth of the coast and the coastal area, while environmental awareness.Large travel agencies abroad pay particular attention to the “Blue Flag” when choosing their destinations offered their clients, insisting on good services offered on the coast, but also to protect the environment. Know this and count all coastal managers, Municipalities, Hotels and Camping, participating in the program voluntarily.Founder and International Coordinator of the Program is the Foundation FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), based in Denmark, with 63 member countries from all continents.Represented in Greece by the Greek Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), the oldest nation-wide environmental organization in the country (1951), active in environmental interventions, actions and programs of nature protection, environmental education with 5 longitudinal programs approved by the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious and general information and awareness. As a representative of FEE, the HSPN is the National Operator of the “Blue Flag” from 1992.The EGY created and operated since 2011, “Identity Register Coastal Swimming” which is an obligation of our country by Community legislation, following the coast to systematically collect a significant number of bathers, are aesthetic and environmental interest or are particularly severe environmental pressures. She conducts sampling annually audit the quality of bathing waters, combined in the Registry in the state of the coast and gives the official designation of national waters nationwide. Registry data are sent each year in the European Union.

The HSPN working with the ministry and especially make use of more formal, disclosed the results of sampling for the involvement of coastal zone management program in the “Blue Flag”.

Note that the performance of the Blue Flag, at a coast, a prerequisite is the quality of water in it, according to the official description above, is excellent. No other grading of the quality, even good, is not acceptable for the Program.

Finally, the ministry, through EGY participates with representatives of the National Jury (EEK) of the “Blue Flag”.

The CEC also participates actively by the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) that the institution supports and encourages local authorities in respect of the application of the criteria.
In addition to the above, the CEC and is composed of representatives from the following institutions: Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity, Ministry of Citizen Protection, Ministry of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, EOT, Hellenic Red Cross, NGO Archelon, Volunteers Inspector beaches and marinas.
The members of the CEC consider in detail the annual award nominations for beaches and marinas that make them the National Operator, having checked the completeness of the applications submitted. Opt for the beaches and marinas that they comply with the requirements of the program and promoting its report, through the HSPN, the International Jury (ECJ), which alone decides on the awards around the world.

DEC representatives in the Programme United Nations Environment (UNEP), World Tourism Organization (WTO), World Federation Lifeguard (ILSE), the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, the European Union for the Protection of the Coasts (EUCC) and Board of FEE.

The procedures of the Program

The coastline that wishes to receive the award “Blue Flag”, it must meet all of its required criteria. For the coast there are 32 strict criteria and marinas 22. Inspectors HSPN and FEE control in the summer time the compliance criteria of the program, noting the National Operator problems and omissions that may lead to temporary or permanent lowering of the “Blue Flag” and withdrawal of the coast or from the international marina and Greek website.The evaluations of inspectors are taken seriously by the National Jury, when, after the end of the summer, examines and evaluates candidate beaches and marinas for next year.

The beach or marina that has rewarded last summer with the Blue Flag for its compliance with the criteria of the program has the potential to be nominated for an award next year, if they prove that the Jury is still really worth it.

Criteria of the International Programme are summarized in the following four categories:

A. Clean sea and coast

Quality of bathing water, as confirmed by random checks as defined by European legislation. The results of the analyzes are shown on the website: http://www.e-per.gr the ministry.
No discharge in industrial and municipal wastewater without proper treatment.
Adequate waste bins, which must be emptied regularly and recycle.
Continuous, periodic cleaning of the beach of trash, cigarette butts etc.
North Coast Tour

Ongoing public information on bathing water quality, by posting the results of microbiological analyzes on the bulletin board of the coast.
Action plans to address any accidental marine pollution, with immediate notification of the public.
Ban on movement of vehicles and motorbikes on the coast.
Prohibition of free camping.
Adequate sanitary facilities with controlled sewerage systems.
C. Safety of visitors

Trained, qualified lifeguards on duty, in accordance with the Ministry of Citizen Protection, or direct access to emergency phone, emergency supplies and first aid.
Accessibility and services for people with special needs (SEN).
D. Protection of nature and environmental awareness

Printed information and guidance behavior on the coast, and areas with sensitive natural environment, flora and fauna in the coastal area.
Reference to the organization’s activities manager coast, to confirm and implement its interest in the natural environment of the coast and the need to protect.
Perform specific actions of environmental education for visitors, especially for children.
